As a part of our commitment to providing community-centric experiences for our students, we have developed a literacy program in partnership with the local Idlewyld Manor Seniors’ Residence.
Once a month, a group of welcoming seniors graciously chat and listen to stories read by the grade one students from our school. The entire process takes about one hour, with some of the hour spent chatting to each other about family, pets and other interests. Many of the residents have developed a camaraderie with a particular student, treating her just like a grandchild of their own.
This opportunity has increased the confidence of our students not only in their reading proficiency, but in their social capacities outside of the school environment. It has broadened their awareness of elders in our community, as well as their appreciation for polite and respectful conversation.
